After almost 2 years in the planning, Empowered People will set of for their most challenging ride so far. The Great Glen Gathering will be our most logistical event that the charity has organised, held over six days ( 3 days riding) with a total cycling distance of 140 miles with an entry of 40 people.
The ride has been designed to test each of our EMpowered cyclists, as they tackle the mixed surfaces of the Great Glen and Caledonian Canal through the beautiful scenery of Western Scotland.
Day one starting from the sea front in Oban, the route takes the riders (National Cycle Route 78) through beautiful and majestic scenery of the West Coast of Scotland. After two ferry crossings the first days ride ends in Fort William.
Day two the riders join the Caledonian Canal, heading for an overnight stop at Fort Augustus.
Day three the riders get a chance to save their legs as they travel down towards Loch Ness, and onto Inverness (National cycle route 1) before climbing past Culloden Battle Field and high up into the hills before descending towards the coastal town of Nairn and the final stop.
Packing (Sunday 4th September)
With over 40 people involved 6 vehicles and 30+ bikes , there was a lot of preparation needed and packing took place over several days.
A large selection of riders brought their equipment and luggage down to the charity hub in Todmorden to be carefully loaded into the specially prepared Sprinter van , where we had fitted a high floor for the luggage to be stored with all the bikes underneath. The 4 Trikes suplies and batteries were put in our main support Van Betty
Monday 5th
7am start from the hub. Everyone in great spirits.
2pm I don’t think we can say the journey up has been completely incident free!
But at least the scenery is stunning
Well we all arrived in Oban, even Betty! Time now to get everything ready for the morning, but a drink and food first!
Tuesday 6th
A difficult but amazing day. 53 miles, some did an extra 23! Two ferry crossings and the most amazing thing, hot sun almost all day! With glorious scenery.
