In the first part of this post Glenys handed over Bob her well loved trike for a full overhaul and upgrade. The main problem with Bob was the drive system which is a Bafang BBS front wheel motor, this has degraded over the last year and due to water ingress is on its last legs. For this reason we have decided to switch Bob over to the TongSheng TSDZ2 Mid drive motor, but that’s to come later!
In this instalment we will start stripping the bike back to the basics and renovate the main components.
The first challenge was removing the rear wheels that have seized on, but nothing a bit of penetrating oil and subtle use of the copper hammer could not fix. We next decided to remove all the electrics, chain, bottom brackets and rear axel braces to get back to clean frame so we can start offering up the new components.
Here is Simon to give you the rundown of where we are up to.
Yes that’s me this time (not behind the camera for once).
The axels are a simple slotted key design that clamp onto standard 26″ mountain bike wheels using the brake disk mount once removed we could spilt them down and inspect them, but due to damaged rims and spokes the decision has been make to replace the hubs with new rims and spokes rather than a simple true up. The rear axel is still running very smoothly, but does need a good clean up, and some touch up paint. And yes I think those brake rotors are past their best as well, so will be replaced.
To be fair Bob has done some serious millage over the last few years so is understandably due a full service!
Keep posted for the next update
